The African American Historical Society of Alaska is a designated tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 organization, established in 1995 by a group of concerned citizens interested in preserving and promoting the achievements of African Americans here in in Alaska as well as in America's past. Our goal is to educate the community about the African American people as well as some of the other nationalities here in Alaska.
AAHSA was instrumental in the passing of Alaska State Legislative Bill, HB100, in 2001 which named the third Saturday in June as "Juneteenth Day". This was a great accomplishment, given that Alaska was one of the last states to join the union. Now they are one of the first states to establish a state law proclaiming the holiday. We are proud to have been a part of this historic event.
The Juneteenth Celebration has been a regular event on the Delaney Park Strip for over 10 years. It began in 1993 as a 1-day celebration at the Fairview Recreation Center, by a for profit organization called D & D Producations. The celebration was then moved to the Park Strip in 1995 and became a 3-day celebration. The African American Business Council produced the event in 1994 and the African American Historical Society of Alaska (AAHSA) took over in 1995 and is the current event organizer. The Fairview Recreation Center is the starting point for our parade in 2008.
