Rose Albert, Koyukon Athabascan, was born in a house boat along the Nowitna River that flows into the mighty Yukon River and was raised about 40 miles downriver in Ruby, Alaska. Ruby is a tiny western town established as a supply point for the gold miners in the 1900's. It now marks the halfway point on the Northern route for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Rose was Drawing in First grade and then started painting in oils in Junior high school at age 14.
She earned an associate of fine arts degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1981. Rose carves and paints realistic Ravens, Eagles, Caribou and Moose on her cedar boxes choosing beaded Athabascan floral designs around the panel of the boxes.
At age 19, Rose was inspired by an oil painting of her great grandfather Big William Demoski and started to paint portraits. 'I love to paint portraits of people of different races because people reflect the beauty of different cultures and I feel as if I'm keeping their images alive through my oil paintings of them,' she explains. Rose captures the vitality and mood of the subject and communicates the natural essence of her portrait subjects to the viewer.
Once a necessity in bush Alaska, sled dogs have always been a part of Rose's life. Growing up, she recalls how her family depended upon dogs for hauling water and wood, and for hunting, and trapping. In 1982 Rose became the first Alaskan Native women to run the Iditarod completing the race in 32nd place. The memories of that race inspired her to do a series of oil paintings depicting the Iditarod each year before the race starts. Her rich northern colors capture the vastness and magnificence of the Alaskan wilderness. Her canvasses bring the dogs and the mushers to life, whether running or resting at rustic checkpoints.
